Undertaking this course includes developing skills and knowledge in assisting with general animal care; following OH&S procedures in an animal care environment; participating in workplace communications; providing food and water for animals; working in the animal care industry; operating a personal computer; operating retail equipment; applying point of sale handling procedures; complying with industry animal welfare requirements.

Minimum Entry Requirements

Award - SATAC application process

Any one of:
  • Satisfactory Achievement of 2 units of English and 1 unit of Mathematics at SACE Stage 1 (or equivalent)
  • Satisfactory completion of SACE Stage 2 (or equivalent)
  • Any Certificate II
  • Satisfactory achievement in the TAFE SA Assessment of Basic Skills (TABS)

Expected Employment Outcome Example

There are a many prospects available for graduates in these areas including the opportunity to work in veterinary practices, pet shops, boarding kennels, animal welfare organisations, and in the biomedical area. The Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing is the national qualification for Veterinary Nurses. The Diploma of Animal Technology provides graduates with opportunities to work in biotechnical research and production, teaching facilities, zoos and wildlife parks.

Note: Completion of a TAFE SA course does not guarantee an employment outcome. Formal requirements other than educational qualifications (eg licensing, professional registration), may apply to some occupations.

Application Selection

Award - SATAC application process

  • Applications for the 2011 Intake must be made through the centralised TAFE Admissions system via SATAC (South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre) by the advertised date.
  • Applicants can make one application for up to six course preferences.
  • Applications for 'Apply to Campus' courses are made direct to the relevant campus and a separate application is required for each course an applicant wants to study.

Fees

Charges vary between courses and subjects and are based on a rate per hour. Concessions may be available to holders of certain government concession cards, and in some circumstances fees may be paid by instalment. A brochure detailing the refund of fees policy is available at each campus. The standard TAFE SA fee for State Government-subsidised courses undertaken by students enrolled in two consecutive semesters is capped at $2140 in 2010. This fee cap does not apply to all courses.

Students are generally expected to purchase their own textbooks, personal equipment, uniforms and stationery.
