Expected Employment Outcome Example

Graduates may have the opportunity to work in the Fashion Industry as a Fashion Designer, Fashion Product Developer, Patternmaker, CAD operator, and in the Fashion Production area, as well as many other areas of the Industry. The course caters predominately for Womenswear with specialty areas such as Menswear/Childrenswear and Bridal able to be explored in the Advanced Diploma. Certificates in Retail focus on the fashion industry.

Note: Completion of a TAFE SA course does not guarantee an employment outcome. Formal requirements other than educational qualifications (eg licensing, professional registration), may apply to some occupations.

Application Selection

Award Courses - SATAC application process

  • Applications for Semester 1 2009 must be made through the centralised TAFE Admissions system via SATAC (South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre) by the advertised date.
  • Applicants can make one application for up to six course preferences.
  • Applications for Places Available courses are made direct to the relevant campus and a separate application is required for each course an applicant wants to study.

Course Notes

This course is highly competitive. For selection purposes applicants are required to complete a spatial test. Please phone 1800 882 661 to book into a session. Successful graduates of the Certificate IV can automatically continue on in the Diploma and the Advanced Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Technology. Where more applications are received than places are available, selection criteria will be applied as listed at www.tafe.sa.edu.au/selectionguide

  • Certificate IV in Applied Fashion Design and Technology
    Principles of design; patternmaking principles; garment construction; fabric and fibre characteristics; sourcing materials; cutting; draping; grading; fashion drawing; fashion trends and forecasting; trade sketching; embellishing garments; using electronic fashion design tools; interacting/networking with the fashion design industry and quality assurance.

Minimum Entry Requirements

Award Courses - SATAC application process

Any one of:
  • Satisfactory completion of SACE Stage 2 (or equivalent)
  • Satisfactory completion of SACE Stage 1 (or equivalent) and 1 year full time equivalent work experience in any area
  • Any Certificate II in same area
  • Any Certificate III
  • Satisfactory achievement in the TAFE SA Assessment of Basic Skills (TABS)
  • 2 years full time equivalent work experience in any area

Qualification/Certification

Successful completion of this course provides you with the Certificate IV in Applied Fashion Design and Technology. Students who successfully complete only one or more units of competency within this Qualification will receive a Statement of Attainment.

Fees

Charges vary between courses and subjects and are based on a rate per hour. Concessions may be available to holders of certain government concession cards, and in some circumstances fees may be paid by instalment. A brochure detailing the refund of fees policy is available at each campus. The standard TAFE SA fee for State Government-subsidised courses undertaken by students enrolled in two consecutive semesters is capped at $2050 in 2009. This fee cap does not apply to all courses.

Students are generally expected to purchase their own textbooks, personal equipment, uniforms and stationery.
