Course Notes

Applies to all Student Groups

  • Course fees and a material fee of $100 are to be paid at enrolment. Due to the complex nature of the course, it is highly recommended to complete all 3 years in order for each student to create the best possible industry show reel upon completion.

Expected Employment Outcome Example

This qualification is for students that want to excel in the field of visual effects and 3D computer animation for television and cinema. It is essentially 2 courses rolled into one - TV production and 3D computer animation (incorporating Visual Effects). Students are taught the practical and theoretical aspects of the movie and television making process so that they understand where computer generated imagery fits in the workflow of a production. With a hands-on practical approach, students get to use industry standard 2D and 3D software and broadcast standard hardware.

Note: Completion of a TAFE SA course does not guarantee an employment outcome. Formal requirements other than educational qualifications (eg licensing, professional registration), may apply to some occupations.

Skills Covered

Certificate IV in Screen and Media (Specialising in CGI and Visual Effects)
Students learn the complete video production process using broadcast standard hardware and the entire Adobe Production Suite. 3D modelling, texturing, animation, lighting and rendering using Maya. Introduction to compositing principles that combine live action video, 2D and 3D elements.

Diploma of Screen and Media (Specialising in CGI and Visual Effects)
Students learn character animation, advanced 3D modelling, lighting and texturing. The student will also gain skills in creating visual effects and managing the CGI pipeline. Students learn Avid Media Composer, Maya, Nuke, Camera tracking and the use of Matte paintings to produce seamless, visual effects for the film and television industry.

Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media (Specialising in CGI and Visual Effects)
Students learn techniques to manage and supervise a visual effects shoot. Advanced compositing techniques using the 2D and 3D capabilities of Nuke. Advanced character animation, rigging and rendering allow students to produce highly realistic projects. Maya's particle and dynamics system are then incorporated into projects that require rain, dust, sand and cloth. Each student focuses on a specialty area that they wish to excel in to create a professional industry show reel.
