Entry Requirements Note: the Diploma of Spatial Information Services is the prerequisite for the Advanced Diploma in Spatial Information Services. Students must show the academic and personal qualities necessary to undertake tertiary studies. This means the satisfactory completion of Year 12 or equivalent and the ability to study in English demonstrated by an IELTS score of 5.5.

Expected Employment Outcome Example

Spatial information services involve the collection, storage, manipulation, analysis and display of spatial data and information, which can be related to a location on earth. The information can be used for the purpose of planning and implementing the efficient administration and development of natural and built resources. Training in this area provides the necessary skills and knowledge for graduates to work as Surveyors or Geographic Information System (GIS) technicians in a wide variety of areas where spatial data is used in the decision making process including asset management, planning, land development, environmental management, marketing, mining, resource development, primary industry, and local government.

Note: Completion of a TAFE South Australia course does not guarantee an employment outcome. Formal requirements other than educational qualifications (eg licensing, professional registration), may apply to some occupations.

Course Content

Computer science, collecting spatial data (advanced); mobile computing; global positioning systems (GPS); geographical information systems (GIS); remote sensing and image analysis; computer aided drafting (CAD); mathematics and spatial statistics; surveying; map design and production; participating in process improvement; responding to client enquiry; storing and retrieving spatial data; DBMS; organising and participating in field expeditions; following OH&S procedures; supervising and managing spatial projects; business studies; developing contracts; management; environmental and natural resource management; computer programming; spatial analysis and visualisation; web design; and desktop publishing.
