The Arts, Design, Fashion and Multimedia industry is one of the most popular and fastest evolving industry groups, firmly entrenched in the exciting world of advanced technology. Industry activities are centred on visual communication, visual merchandising, photography and graphic design, fashion design and footwear, multimedia, screen and motion picture, radio and television, graphic reproduction and printing. Increased training levels and employment opportunities are predicted for the applied design, printing and photographic industries following the widespread move (nationally and internationally) from photomechanical reproduction to digital reproduction. TAFE SA qualifications in these disciplines can lead to a wide variety of career options, such as: graphic design; commercial photography; fashion design and custom made footwear; multimedia development; screen and game artists; graphic pre-press; printing including screen printing, binding and finishing; desktop publishing; and photographic developing and printing. Students with an interest and talent in visual arts, dance, acting or writing and those who wish to work behind the scenes in creative ventures such as galleries, studios, film, TV, theatre and publishing may well find their niche in this galaxy of career pathways. In the entertainment and media sectors, the competition is high but the rewards for those with dedication and talent are boundless. Employment is forecast to grow in the areas of film, television, radio and stage direction, the visual arts and crafts, and media production and presentation. Career Group Description
Acting and Dance Our lives are constantly enriched by the creative, challenging and stimulating world of performance, whether it be live entertainment, film, television or community arts. Acting and dance graduates work across a wide range of performance roles, media and locations. Both courses are profoundly performance based. The thrust is professional training with widely experienced artists/teachers, and guest choreographers and directors from the highest echelons of the profession. Courses are presented that mirror professional industry practice. Students are empowered and engaged to develop informed professional attitudes and practices. Students are guided and supported to achieve individual goals so that every student has the opportunity to successfully enter the professional performance space. Graduates of these courses will be able to work in the dance and acting fields of performing arts. The Bachelor of Dance Performance has an excellent reputation based on the success of many graduates who are employed by major companies in South Australia, Australia and overseas.
Artists and Craft Workers All aspects of our lives are enriched by visual culture, craft and design. Graduates of these courses are equipped to excel at the broad range of activities that embrace an artist’s and designer’s practice. Artists and designers may choose to practice independently, join industry enterprises or participate in public art commissions and community art activities. Opportunities include working in jewellery, sculpture, painting, ceramics, art photography, printmaking, galleries and in education.
Entertainment Technicians and Designers This is traditionally an area with good prospects for employment which is currently forecast to continue as a growth sector of the economy. There is a variety of courses designed to prepare students for a career in their chosen field. Completion of certificate, diploma and advanced diploma courses can lead to work in theatre, corporate presentation, festivals, and other live entertainment; film and television production; animation; contemporary music performance and composition; display design and construction for museums; and employment in tourism-linked entertainment such as theme parks, casinos and cruise ships. Graduates from certificate, diploma and advanced diploma courses in technical and design skill areas have opportunities to gain employment in a wide range of occupations including lighting, sound, staging, vision systems technicians and as stage managers; or as costume, set and props makers; and as scenic and costume designers. Students have access to fully equipped, state of the art facilities. Students will be individually counselled in the selection of the most suitable companion subjects from the elective unit bank, based on their occupational goal.
Entertainment Technology Entertainment Technology courses cover the production and creation of media content for consumers. Successful graduates will be able to seek work in a wide range of areas including the film and television sectors, video production and facility houses, special effects companies, game production studios, and mobile phone content developers.
Fashion Designers, Garment Construction and Fashion Retail Graduates may have the opportunity to work in the Fashion Industry as a Fashion Designer, Fashion Product Developer, Patternmaker, CAD operator, and in the Fashion Production area, as well as many other areas of the Industry. The course caters predominately for Womenswear with specialty areas such as Menswear/Childrenswear and Bridal able to be explored in the Advanced Diploma. Certificates in Retail focus on the fashion industry.
Footwear and Leather Workers This course will enable you to graduate with multiple skills that will be sufficient to service clients in a small business or small cooperative enterprise environment. You will be able to operate as a sole proprietor or in partnership or cooperative ventures, to produce quality products for the lower-to-mid to high-range complexity levels of the custom made footwear market.
Game Industry Designers Australians are spending over $2 million per day on interactive computer games. Worldwide, Games are now bigger than film. In Australia, the Games development industry comprises over 40 companies, spread throughout Australia. Qualifications in this area look at the development of art assets to be used in console and phone games.
Graphic Designers Persons employed in the Advertising & Graphic Design industry produce artwork and page layouts for reproduction in print and electronic media such as magazines, newspapers, books and websites, and for corporate identity programs, exhibitions and for a broad spectrum of advertising campaigns. Graphic designers may specialise in a variety of fields including television, film, web design and computer graphics; set and exhibition design; corporate design; book and magazine design, advertising and illustration. They may progress to positions as design directors, art directors or creative directors. Graphic designers may work as members of design studios or advertising agencies, or alone undertaking consultancy or freelance work. Graphic designers must be creative and imaginative, understand colour and form, and be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, have good marketing and communication skills abilities and be able to work as part of a team.
Multimedia Developers Multimedia qualifications concentrate on the design and production of interface design for use in websites, DVD, CD-ROM, and mobile device authoring. Qualifications look at skills in creating film, television, video, 3D modelling and animation programs. Graduates from certificate and diploma courses in multimedia have opportunities to gain employment in creating websites, audiovisual presentations and interactive kiosks. Skills developed in graphic design, animation and authoring will lead to fulfilling careers within the multimedia industry including work with web developers and screen production companies. TAFE SA in its delivery of the qualifications place a strong emphasis on authoring and design skills and developing skills needed for effective content management.
Musicians and Musical Technicians Certificate courses in this area equip graduates with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills related to performance and/or production of commercial music to enable them to gain employment in the commercial music industry. This includes arranging, composition, music business principles and experience in performing at on-the-job venues.
Photographers and Photographic Assistants Qualifications in photography prepare students for employment in the photographic and allied industries. They also provide the skills and knowledge base for graduates to set up their own business.
Printing and Graphic Arts Workers Interested in studying in the areas of computer technology and design, with aspects of electronic publishing, digital design and/or sign production, then these courses may well be the ones for you! These courses encompass major aspects of the electronic publishing and graphic design industry, as well as having application to web design and development. These courses will prepare you for a wide choice of career options in the printing, graphic and sign production industries.
Visual Merchandisers Visual merchandising is a term used by industry practitioners for a range of occupations in the creative presentation of goods and services. Some of the occupations you may pursue include visual merchandiser, window dresser, exhibition and special event designer and installation worker, creative stylist, and freelance visual merchandiser. Because of the nature of the industry, you may find work in a diverse range of related occupations. The course aims to develop multi-skilled, creative individuals who will be flexible in their approach to work within the industry.
Writers The course aims to provide training in the practices and techniques of professional writing. The course provides training in the styles, techniques and conventions appropriate to the variety of writing types; it assists students to develop knowledge of markets relevant to particular types of writing; it educates students in the preparation and submission of manuscripts for publication; and it provides them with knowledge of running small writing businesses. Many writers are self-employed or work under contract. Some may maintain employment outside of the writing industry to subsidise their income from writing. Business, government departments, small or regional newspapers and magazines, television and radio stations, film production companies and theatres may employ writers. Many writers seek publication of original manuscripts by publishers.
