The building, construction and furnishing industries are dynamic sectors offering many career opportunities including self-employment and small business development for workers with trade certificates. A significant new trend in these sectors is emerging technologies to challenge traditional skill levels. TAFE SA qualifications in these areas can lead to careers as Bricklayers, Blocklayers, Cabinetmakers, Carpenters, Concrete Workers, Floor and Wall Tilers, Floorcovering, Furniture Polishers, Furniture Upholsterers, Joiners, Painters and Decorators, Plasterers, Plumbers, Roof Tilers, Sign Writers, Stone Masons, Wall and Ceiling Fixers. Graduates are able to pursue employment as sub contractors, project builders, work supervisors, designers and estimators.

TAFE SA Career Groups within Building and Furnishing Trades and Furniture Design

Career Group Description
Builders, Designers, Drafters and Support Workers These courses prepare graduates for work on commercial and industrial projects as well as low rise residential buildings. Students will also gain the skills to work in an architectural or design office preparing plans and documents.
Carpenters, Furniture Designers and Furnishing Trades Graduates from these areas have rewarding and challenging career options in carpentry, building construction, joinery, cabinet making, furniture making, furniture polishing, floor sanding, glass and glazing, wood machining and upholstery. Graduates of vocational education certificates at TAFE SA may have an increased chance of securing employment as an apprentice in those sectors where an apprenticeship is available.
Interior Designers These courses will enable graduates to apply for employment as an assistant decoration consultant in specialised wholesale or retail outlets. Graduates may also seek employment with independent interior decoration and design consultancies.
Pre-Apprentices in Mortar Trowel Trades, Painting and Decorating, Signwriting and Plumbing Certificates in vocational education studies provide the foundation skills for a career in construction and further graduates' chances of obtaining an apprenticeship. Vocational education studies are offered in construction; brick/blocklaying/tiling and plastering; furnishing; furnishing (floor covering & finishing); painting and decorating; signwriting; and plumbing.
