TAFEstart , Vocational Preparation

The TAFEstart courses equip students with skills, knowledge and attitudes that prepare them for further learning, employment and life changes. TAFEstart provides a strong foundation in general and vocational education including language, literacy and numeracy development to the level necessary to successfully undertake further vocational study or employment. These courses are very flexible and can be customised to meet the individual needs with study available on a full-time, part-time or individual subject basis. These courses enhance personal development, career planning, employment related skills and develop a range of employability skills and the key competencies of communication, working in groups, problem solving and using technology. They can also include work place training and assessment during structured vocational placements and on campus vocational studies in a wide range of vocational areas. Specific study options are also available for people seeking to enter a range of occupations e.g. SA Police, Defence Forces and SA Fire Service that require selection testing as part of the entry requirements. TAFEstart courses are designed to meet the needs of a diverse group of students, including people seeking a career change, retrenched workers seeking new skills, employees seeking promotion, women returning to the workforce, young people at risk of disengaging from formal learning to the long-term unemployed, people with a disability and others with special needs, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and those from non-English Speaking Backgrounds. TAFEstart can help you get the job you want, and supports career development and change. The program has excellent outcomes with most participants reporting increased confidence and success in meeting their objectives in further education, personal development and employment.

TAFE SA Career Groups within TAFEstart , Vocational Preparation

Career Group Description
English as a Second Language The Certificates in English Proficiency provide English language skills to those from a non English speaking background. These courses provide a graduated progression towards English language proficiency, covering the four macro skills of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. In addition they provide vital knowledge and awareness of Australian cultural and societal attributes, issues and values in order to assist in a smooth transition to living in Australia. These courses may include preparation for further study, employment and career change. This can include supported work placements and vocational electives that allow students to experience components of other TAFE SA courses including Child Care, Aged Care, Food Processing and Hospitality. The Diploma of English Proficiency provides vocational and academic English language skills to overseas born professionals to enable them to apply for registration to practise in their chosen profession in Australia, and to students who wish to undertake further tertiary level studies. Note: Some VISA categories will not be eligible for this training.
Literacy, Numeracy and Preparatory Studies Certificates I and II in Introductory Vocational Education are designed to provide students with a strong foundation in general and vocational education including language, literacy and numeracy development to the level necessary to successfully undertake further vocational study or employment.
Preparatory Studies Students doing Preparatory Studies will develop skills to work in a team or work group; performing defined tasks with the support of trainers; developing language, literacy and numeracy skills for the workplace.
Sign Language Certificates II and III in AUSLAN will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to communicate with people who are deaf. You will be introduced to and learn the Australian Sign Language (AUSLAN). This qualification provides you with introductory AUSLAN skills which can be an advantage for work in teaching, child care, community welfare, public service and health positions.
Spoken and Written English Courses in Spoken and Written English assist students in their development of English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. These courses are only available to clients eligible for the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. The AMEP provide basic English language tuition to help migrants and humanitarian entrants from non English speaking backgrounds settle successfully in Australia.
Women's Education Women's Education The Certificates in Women's Education are designed to provide women with the skills, knowledge and self confidence to proceed to further education or employment and deal with career and life changes. Many of the students choosing these courses have been out of the workforce because of family responsibilities. The Certificates develop literacy and numeracy, computing and a range of specialised interest, self development and work related competencies. These Certificates provide excellent outcomes with many students going onto tertiary education, succeeding in their chosen career path and dealing effectively with life changes.
