Education Requirements

Entry requirements may vary, but employers generally require Year 10.

Training is usually both on and off the job. The off-the-job training is provided through TAFE SA.

Nature of the Job

The stablehand is responsible for contributing to a safe, clean and hygienic environment. The stablehand works under the direction of a trainer or stable supervisor but is also able to act autonomously in certain situations. Tasks include brushing, grooming, feeding, handling and exercising of horses along with a range of other tasks which will vary from one stable to another. These will include cleaning and maintenance of stables and training equipment and may include accompanying horses to race meetings and other events in which the horses are involved.

Typical Physical Working Environment

Stable hands will generally be working in stables on studs, farms etc. Much of their work is carried out very early in the morning and they also work on weekends and public holidays.
