Receptionist of tourism operations are found in a variety of State, local and shire regions, primarily in tourism areas.
Nature of the Job
A receptionist in a tourism operation, such as a caravan park, may be required to provide accommodation reception services, or receive and process reservations from other businesses. They need good local and interstate knowledge of various things to see and do in the area, or even state and Australia wide. A broad understanding of office skills and computing skills are essential. Reception staff may be responsible or stock control of merchandise and undertaking the processing of financial transactions. They would be required to interact with a diverse range of people, including international visitors.
Typical Physical Working Environment
You may find yourself working extended hours outside of the 9 to 5 jobs. This would typically include weekends and holidays, as people require assistance with tourism and travel plans, including the booking of accommodation, throughout all 365, or 366 (leap year) of the year.
Typical Occupational Example
A tourist has arrived in a new location and has already booked their accommodation online at the local Caravan Park. They make their way to the reception desk at the Caravan Park to check in. They are greeted by the Receptionist with a friendly smile when they arrive, who offers to help them. The Receptionist politely asks some general questions, while they are processing the booking, about the tourists' travels to make them feel at comfortable and important. The tourist replies and asks about the region and the types of tourism activities and sights they could engage in. The receptionist is knowledgeable of the tourism in the area and gives the tourist some options, and provides them with some brochures as well. The receptionist gives the tourist the keys to the cabin and provides a map explaining where to locate the cabin in the park, and wishes them well on their visit.

Salaries vary according to the sector and region in which you work. Bonus incentives exist among some employers. Salaries may also vary with age and experience. Commencement salary would be approximately $35,000 dependent on where you enter the industry.
